(Krzyz Zaslugi RP). Instituted in 1923. Hardshelled design on both the lid and base, the exterior with a maroon cloth fabric covering in an ornate interlocking pattern, the lid bearing the Polish Eagle in silver-coloured ink, inside lid lined in white satin and padded, a salmon-coloured synthetic insert placed within the base and housing a white felt recessed medal bed, designed without a secure closure, measuring 77 mm (w) x 142 mm (h) x 25.5 mm (d), very light edge wear evident on the exterior, light soiling present in the satin lining of the inside lid and the white felt of the medal bed, very fine.
Footnote: The Cross of Merit was instituted in 1923 and awarded for outstanding public and professional service to the Republic. Civilians and military personnel, as well as foreigners, were eligible for the award. It was established in three classes: I Class Gold Grade Cross, II Class Silver Grade Cross and III Class Bronze Grade Cross. The cross can be awarded up to four times in each class to the same person. Each additional award is indicated by a bar with oak leaves placed on the ribbon.
