Poland. An Order Of Saint Stanislaus, I Class Breast Star, C. 1860

Instituted May 7, 1765 by King Stanislaw August Poniatowski. A silver eight point star composed of clusters of seven smooth rays, the center medallion presenting a red enamel cypher SAR for Stanislaus Augustus Rex, on a white enamelled field with the inscription around the exterior reading PRAEMIANDO INCITAT (Encourage by Rewarding), encircled by a green enamelled wreath with Gold rings on each side, the reverse is plain with a single pin assembly, measures 81mm (w) x 79.60mm (h), weighs 54.5 grams, heavy enamel chipping on central white enamel field resulting in the loss of inscription, poor enamelling in the wreath, exhibiting wear on the reverse with scratch test marks, hinge and clasp functional, overall better than fine condition.

Footnote: The Order was conferred in recognition of meritorious service to the Polish crown. Members were originally required to provide proof of at least four quarters of nobility, but after 1815 membership was extended to other civilians and military personnel. The original statutes outline a limit of 100 Knights, although this regulation was never followed by the King. From 1765-1795, 1774 Knights were appointed to the Order.
