Italy, Republic. An Order of Merit of the Italian Republic, Grand Gross Set by Cravanzola, c. 1960

Instituted March 3, 1951. Type I (1951-2001). In Silver, the Grand Cross presenting a white enamel cross with eagles in each quadrant and a central five point star, the reverse mirrors the obverse, surmounted by a large crown, measures 70.2 mm (w) x 96.3 mm (h), marked 800 for silver fineness on ring, worn on original full length sash, enamels intact, light gilt wear, in extremely fine condition. The Star of the Order, featuring an eight point silver star with faceted rays, the obverse presenting a white enamel cross with eagles in each quadrant and a central five point star, the reverse features a single vertical pin suspension, reverse cartouche removed (but included in case) denoting Cravanzola E. Gardino as the maker, measures 82.3mm (w) x 84.8 mm (h), weighs 44.6 grams, light wear, in extremely fine condition. 

Contained in its original case of issue, a green leatherette exterior, creme coloured medal bed interior with silk lid marked Cravanzola Succ E. Gardino, measures 130 mm (w) x 285 mm (l) x 60mm (d), hinge and clasp functional, light wear, in very fine condition.
