(Ordine Reale delle Due Sicilie). Instituted 1808. 1808-1814 version. An 1860's display manufacture by French maker Bacqueville, consisting of a ball-tipped five-armed red enameled star in silver gilt, with obverse centre depicting a silver gilded coat of arms of Sicily, “Trinacria”, surrounded by an enameled blue border with the inscription PRO RENOVATA PATRIA (for a new country) in silver gilt, reverse centre featuring an unusual portrait of Joachim Murat surrounded by a blue enameled border depicting the inscription GIOACCHINO RE DI NAPOLI (Gioacchino king of Napoli) both in silver gilt, star surmounted by a large very detailed crowned eagle in silver gilt, with French hallmark denoting manufacture since 1838, partial maker mark on ring suspension, measuring 42.50 mm (w) x 73.64 mm (h - inclusive of ring suspension), with toned silver gilt on the reverse and very minor lost of blue enamels, accompanied by replacement ribbon, near very fine.
This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society. His knowledge and passion for history and awards is evident in this meticulously compiled collection that is now available in its entirety for the first time exclusively on eMedals.com.
