Description
Description
(Altábornagy Nagykabát). An example of a rare and overall well preserved greatcoat belonging to a Lieutenant General “Altábornagy” of the Hungarian regency. It is constructed of fine quality dark khaki-coloured wool, with the traditional turned-down collar lined on the obverse with brown doeskin and bearing two collar tabs, one per side. The collar tabs are constructed of red wool, the left tab bearing a laurel twig while the right bears an oak twig, both constructed of twisted and rolled gilt bullion wires, and with a decorative gilt button near the top bearing the Hungarian crown, measuring 45 mm (w) x 120 mm (l). Both cuffs feature red piping near the bottom third where the cuff starts, while the right cuff decorated with two narrow and one broad strip of khaki-coloured tresse, with an additional wool patch directly above, featuring two laurel twigs that are tied together at the bottom, with a Hungarian crown in the center, the combination of which denotes the rank of Lieutenant General (Altábornagy). This greatcoat features standard dual lapels, both lined with bright red wool, with the addition of an embroidered bead and loop at the neck of the collar for closing of the tunic during adverse wind and weather conditions. Both sides of this greatcoat are adorned with five gilt buttons each, positioned in a vertical manner, and are met with reinforced buttonholes on the opposing sides. All buttons are constructed of gilt bronze with a magnetic core, and adorned on the obverse with the Hungarian crown, measuring 25 mm in diameter, and marked “Qualität” (Quality) in German. At waist-height, in the front, is a single pocket per side, secured shut via a scalloped flap. The pockets are lined on the interior, featuring a horizontal slit within them in order to be accessed via both sides of this greatcoat. At waist height but on the reverse are two decorative flaps that are lined with red piping along the edges, with a faux belt and the addition of two matching gilt buttons. It is otherwise unlined, except for the decorative strip of lining near the bottom, constructed of red diamond-quilted rayon. This Hungarian greatcoat measures 45 cm across the shoulders (seam to seam), with a sleeve length of 63 cm, and an overall body length of 126 cm. The exterior of this greatcoat is well preserved, with only minor material fatigue, but with the inside liners partially separated from the greatcoat and held in place via field repair and modern safety pins, in overall better than very fine condition.
