Description
(Ορθόδοξη Εκκλησία του Αγίου Διονυσίου Ζακύνθου / Orthódoxi Ekklisía tou Agíou Dionysíou Zakýnthou). Insignia in silvered bronze with blue and white enamels, hand-painted centrepiece, mounted to a silver four-pointed star base, each star point with nine emanating rays, with two short emanating rays between each star point, maker marked "ΚΕΛΑΪΔΗΣ" (Kelaidis of Athens) on the pin, measuring 75.8 mm (w) x 75.3 mm (h), vertical pinback flanked by dual stays, intact enamels, dent evident on the edge of the centrepiece ring at the 7 o'clock position, residue present in the recessed areas from cleaning, better than very fine.
Footnote: Saint Dionysios of Zakynthos was a sixteenth-century Orthodox Christian Archbishop of Aegina, born on the Greek island of Zakynthos in 1546. He is the patron saint of Zakynthos (sometimes called Zante in English). In his early life, Dionysios joined a monastery a few miles off the coast of Zakynthos. After a while living there, he was encouraged by his fellow monks to be ordained as a priest, of which he did. He eventually decided to travel to the Holy Land by way of Athens. After arriving in Athens, he was made Archbishop of Aigina despite personal protests in humility. In about the year 1589, the Patriarch of Constantinople made Archbishop Dionysios the Archbishop of Zakynthos, he stayed in this position until a permanent Archbishop arrived. After this, he returned to his island monastery where he lived out the rest of his life until his death on November 17, 1624. He had asked to be buried in the monastery and his grave is still to be found in the chapel of St George; a dependent of the monastery. It has been found that his body remains intact and emits a mixed fragrance of flowers and frankincense. Therefore he is venerated, and his sainthood has been proclaimed by the Patriarch of Constantinople. His feast day is celebrated on December 17th, and on August 24th, the Church celebrates the transfer of his holy relics.
