Greece, Kingdom. An Order of the Redeemer, Grand Cross Breast Star C.1900

(Τάγμα του Σωτήρος), a large silver breast star of radiating faceted rays centring a circular medallion bearing a finely painted and enamelled iconographic bust of Christ the Redeemer, surrounded by a deep blue enamelled ring inscribed “Η ΔΕΞΙΑ ΣΟΥ ΧΕΙΡ ΚΥΡΙΕ ΔΕΔΟΞΑΣΤΑΙ ΕΝ ΙΣΧΥΙ”,  Your right hand, O Lord, has been glorified in power, measuring 86.9 mm, weighing 68.4 grams, the reverse fitted with a vertical pin and double stabiliser bars and bearing the full maker’s inscription “COURONNES & MEDAILLES – LEMAITRE – CHEZ COQ EN BOUTIN – 10 RUE DE LA PAIX – PARIS”, exhibiting attractive age patina with evident period manufacture, with noted cracked enamel at the 12 o’clock position on the obverse ring, yet remaining structurally sound and visually impressive, very fine condition.

Footnote: The Order of the Redeemer, instituted in 1833, is the oldest and highest order of merit of the Kingdom of Greece, established to commemorate the nation’s independence and dedicated to Christ as the spiritual saviour of the Greek people. The breast star is worn with the Grand Cross grade and represents the pinnacle of the order’s insignia. The inscription on the obverse enamel ring derives from the Book of Exodus 15:6 and reflects divine strength and deliverance. Parisian-made examples by Maison Lemaitre are among the most respected and finely produced insignia of the 19th and early 20th centuries, prized for their craftsmanship and adherence to official specifications.
