United Kingdom. A Queen’s South Africa Medal to Pte. Joyce, Liverpool Regiment

Instituted 1899. In silver, the rim impressed 5303 PTE. P. JOYCE, LIVERPOOL REGT with DEFENCE OF LADYSMITH and SOUTH AFRICA 1901, replacement ribbon, minor marks, lovely patina, extremely fine. 

Footnote: P. Joyce of the Liverpool Regiment is listed as a lance corporal on the Queen South Africa Medal roll. He was invalided on August 17, 1900. Newspaper reports from the Guardian, dated January 8, 1894 state that P. Joyce of the Liverpool Regiment was awarded the army medal for long service and good conduct by the Duke of Cambridge. 

The Liverpool Regiment (later the King’s Regiment (Liverpool)) deployed several battalions to South Africa during the Second Boer War (1899–1902), including both regular and volunteer units. The regiment took part in a variety of operations, ranging from set-piece battles to garrison and patrol duties, often in harsh terrain and under difficult conditions. Its soldiers were involved in securing towns, guarding railways, and engaging Boer commandos in mobile operations, which were essential for maintaining British control across the Cape Colony, Orange Free State, and Transvaal. The regiment’s adaptability and professionalism allowed it to operate effectively in both conventional warfare and counter-insurgency roles, demonstrating the experience and discipline that characterized British line infantry in colonial campaigns.
