Description
Instituted 1899. In silver, full size, rim officially impressed 827 PTE J. DYER. MANCH. REGT, with CAPE COLONY, TRANSVAAL, WITTEBERGEN, SOUTH AFRICA 1901, light contact marks throughout, lovely patina, in very fine condition.
Footnote: J. Dyer is on the medal roll for the South Africa- Second Boer War. He served with the 2nd Battalion Manchester.
The 2nd Battalion, Manchester Regiment played an active role in the Second Boer War from 1899 to 1902. They were deployed to Natal shortly after the outbreak of war and participated in early battles, notably Elandslaagte in October 1899, where British forces attacked Boer positions to secure the railway line. They then took part in the operations to lift the Siege of Ladysmith, including heavy fighting along the Tugela River at Colenso, Spion Kop, and Vaal Krantz in January–February 1900. After Ladysmith was relieved in March, the battalion advanced into the Transvaal, contributing to the capture of key Boer towns and assisting in securing railway lines.
During the later guerrilla phase of the war, the 2nd Manchesters conducted patrols, blockhouse duties, and mounted sweeps to contain Boer commandos, often in harsh and isolated conditions. Their service earned men of the battalion the Queen’s South Africa Medal with clasps for major battles and campaigns, and the King’s South Africa Medal for those serving into 1902, reflecting both their frontline engagements and the sustained effort in counter-guerrilla operations.
