A GFC (Gorringes Flying Column) Shoulder Title, in sheet brass, measures 44.4 mm (w) x 20.1 mm (h), one intact soldered lead loop on the reverse (one missing), light wear, very fine.
Footnote: G. Heathfield is on the medal roll for the Queen’s South Africa Medal, serving with Gorringe’s Flying Column.
Gorringe's Flying Column was one of the highly mobile British mounted columns employed during the Second Boer War (1899–1902) under the command of Brigadier-General Sir John Edmond Gough Gorringe. Formed during the later stages of the conflict, the column consisted of mounted infantry, cavalry, artillery, and colonial troops organized for rapid movement against Boer commandos. Operating principally in the Orange River Colony and Transvaal, it conducted long-range patrols, reconnaissance, convoy protection, and aggressive pursuit operations aimed at disrupting Boer mobility and capturing men, livestock, and supplies. Gorringe's Flying Column participated in numerous "drives" and sweeping operations that characterized the guerrilla phase of the war, helping to restrict the movement of Boer forces and contributing to the gradual collapse of organized resistance before the Peace of Vereeniging in May 1902.
Provenance: Previously sold by Noonan Mayfair, June 1998, No. 129.
