Description
1. India General Service Medal, 1854, with “BURMA 1887–89” Clasp – Silver, 35 mm, with diademed left-facing effigy of young Queen Victoria and inscription “VICTORIA REGINA”, reverse depicting Victory crowning a warrior, with palm and trophy of arms in background. Contact marks to rim. Fitted with ornate swivelling scroll suspension and ribbon. Clasp “BURMA 1887–89” awarded for participation in the pacification operations following the annexation of Upper Burma, largely small-unit jungle and riverine campaigns against insurgent forces.
2. Army Long Service & Good Conduct Medal, young Victoria (Large Letters), Scroll Suspender, named to 2634 Pte. W. Jew, Worcestershire Regt – Silver, 35 mm, The obverse of the original medal showed a Trophy of Arms that incorporated a central shield bearing the Royal Coat of Arms, reverse with raised inscription “FOR LONG SERVICE AND GOOD CONDUCT” in four lines, surmounted by an ornate swivelling scroll suspension and decorative ribbon bar at top. Two notable edge knocks. Original deep crimson ribbon, intact.
Condition of both: Very Fine to Nearly Extremely Fine, with matching patina.
Footnote:
The India General Service Medal (1854) with clasp Burma 1887–89 was awarded to British and Indian Army personnel who took part in the counter-insurgency and consolidation operations in Burma following its annexation by the British in 1886. These actions often involved arduous service in remote, hostile jungle environments.
Private W. Jew of the Worcestershire Regiment would have been serving in the regiment’s 2nd Battalion, which was deployed to Burma during this period. His award of the Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal reflects a career marked by discipline and extended service, typical of long-term regular soldiers of the Victorian era.
