A First and Second War Medal Bar, swing mounted, horizontal pin on reverse, measures 160mm (w) x 90mm (h- from bottom of medals), consisting of:
A 1914-1915 Star, in bronze, reverse privately engraved S/LT M.L.COX. R.N, light wear, very fine.
A British War Medal, in silver, rim privately engraved S/LT M.L.COX. R.N, light wear, dark patina, very fine.
A First War Victory medal, bronze gilt, rim privately engraved S/LT M.L.COX. R.N, light wear, very fine.
A Second War Defence Medal, nickel, in very fine condition.
A 1939-45 War Medal, nickel, in very fine condition.
A Norwegian Haakon VII Cross of Freedom, in silver and enamels, reverse embossed TJUNI ALT FOR NORGE 1945, reverse maker marked J TOSTRUP with silver mark 925 S at the bottom of 6 o’clock arm, enamels intact, in very fine condition.
A miniature medal bar included featuring:
1914-15 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal, Second War Defence Medal, 1939-45 War Medal, Haakon VII Cross of Freedom, measures 95mm (w) x 54mm (h), with horizontal pin on reverse, in very fine condition.
Accompanied by a Framed Award Diploma for the Haakon VII Cross of Freedom to Kommandörkaptein Murray Lockhart Cox, R.N., for “outstanding services to the cause of Norway during the war.”, dated June 19, 1947, contained in a wooden frame with glass cover. The reverse has the Notice of Award attached and correspondence with the Foreign Office provided the approval for wear.
Two black and white photos of warships, Iron Duke class and Queen Elizabeth class with signatures of the officers, around 1918, reinforced on grey cardstock. One measures 32cm (w) x 24cm (h), light damage to cardstock edges, pencil on the reverse, photo remains in extremely fine condition. The second measures 33cm (w) x 25.5cm (h), light wear to edges, pencil on reverse, some foxing to photo, remains in very fine condition.
Footnote: Murray Lochart Cox was born on November 2, 1898, and enlisted for the First War in August of 1914. He served in the Navy during both the First and Second World War. On December 7, 1922, he married Alice May Turner in Middlesex county. He died in 1977.
