c.1820 Hannover Guelphic Order Knight’s Cross with Swords (Guelphen Orden Ritterkreuz mit Schwertern); a gold Maltese cross with ball finals and lions between the arms of the cross; the obverse with a central medallion of multi-coloured enamels depicting a white horse above green fields on a red background, surrounded by a blue enameled ring inscribed “Nec Aspera Terrent” (Latin - Even difficulties don’t scare us”, all surrounded by a green enameled laurel wreath with red berries; the reverse with a central medallion of red enamels, bearing the royal monogram of Georgius Rex in gold, surrounded by a green enameled laurel wreath with red berries, topped with a Hannover crown; with crossed swords directly above the top arm of the cross, with a non-swiveling crown directly above; on loop for suspension, with its broad early-style British suspension, on a period original ribbon; measuring 30.38 mm x 55.03 mm; weighing 17.0 grams; without damage of any kind; extremely well preserved; in near mint condition.
This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society. His knowledge and passion for history and awards is evident in this meticulously compiled collection that is now available in its entirety for the first time exclusively on eMedals.com.
