A Crimea Medal, in silver, rim impressed WM BLAKE. 4TH LT DRAGN, with ALMA and SEBASTOPOL clasps, light wear, very fine.
A Turkish Crimean Medal, in silver, unnamed as issued, light wear, very fine.
Both Medals are contained in a framed setting featuring a scene from the Crimean War with the medals secured to the top right hand corner. The reverse bears a paper backing (ripped), with a horizontal wire for hanging.
Footnote: Private William Blake enlisted in the 4th Light Dragoons on April 21, 1852. He served in the Eastern Campaign in 1854; embarked for the East with the Light Brigade; went to Varna; in reconnaissance on the Danube; embarked for the Crimea, & was present at the Battle of Alma on September 20, 1854. He was invalided to Scutari on September 23rd, and he died the following day.
Blake is listed on the medal roll and was awarded the clasps for Alma and Sebastopol.
The 4th Light Dragoons served with the British light cavalry during the early phase of the Crimean War, taking part in the Allied advance after landing in Crimea in September 1854. Prior to the his death, Private Blake would have been involved in reconnaissance, screening movements, and supporting the army’s march inland, including their presence around the time of the Battle of the Alma, where cavalry units helped protect the flanks and pursue retreating Russian forces rather than engaging in a major charge.
