A First War Medal Pair, including a British War Medal, constructed of a round silver medal, the obverse centre presenting Sir Bertram Mackennal’s bareheaded effigy of King George V facing left, with the legend GEORGIVS V BRITT: OMN: REX ET IND: IMP (GEORGE V. KING OF ALL THE BRITISH ISLES AND EMPEROR OF INDIA), the reverse presents Saint George naked on horseback and armed with a short sword, trampling the Prussian eagle shield and the emblems of death (skull and crossbones), with ocean waves in the background, with a rising sun near the right upper rim, the years 1914 and 1918 appear on the perimeter in the left and right fields, with M2-153037 PTE. G.A. SWADDLING A.S.C. impressed on the bottom edge of the medal, measuring 36.19 mm in diameter, and in extremely fine condition. A Victory Medal, constructed of bronze, the obverse shows the winged, full-length, full-front figure of Victory with her left arm extended and holding a palm branch in her right hand, the reverse presents the words THE GREAT WAR FOR CIVILISATION 1914-1919 in four lines, surrounded by a laurel wreath, with M2-153037 PTE. G.A. SWADDLING A.S.C. impressed on the bottom edge of the medal, measuring 36.28 mm in diameter, and in extremely fine condition. All on period original ribbons, mounted to a suspension with swing bar pinback.
Footnote: Private George Alfred Swaddling, born in 1894 to Charles Julius and Isabella Henriette Swaddling in Croydon, England, served with the Army Service Corps.
