Douglas Dickson McCulloch was born in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia in 1874. He was employed as a civil engineer when he enlisted in Halifax in February, 1916. He was hospitalized for one week from June to July 1916 for inflammation of the lymphatic glands. McCulloch served overseas in England with the C.A.S.C., from 1916-1918. He embarked for Russia in October 1918, and was attached to the “Syren” detail, prior to being attached to the “Elope” force, with the N.R.E.F. He served in Russia until March 1919, and was ultimately discharged in September 1919.
The Russian Expeditionary Force refers to the Allied military detachments, including British, Canadian, and other Imperial troops, deployed to North Russia during the closing stages of the First World War and the subsequent Russian Civil War. Operating primarily from ports such as Murmansk and Archangel, these forces were tasked with securing Allied war supplies, protecting key infrastructure, and supporting anti-Bolshevik (“White”) forces against the Red Army. British units serving with this force were officially designated as part of the British North Russia Expeditionary Force, a little-known campaign that extended Allied military involvement beyond the formal end of the Great War and represents one of the final overseas expeditionary operations of the British Empire in the First World War era.
