United Kingdom. An Afghanistan Medal Awarded, 72nd Highlanders c. 1881

Instituted in 1881. In silver, obverse shows portrait of Queen Victoria facing left, reverse shows marching and mounted soldiers with arms with an elephant carrying a cannon, clasps on original striped ribbon from Kandahar, Kabul, Charasia, and Peiwar Kotal, rim of the medal engraved with the recipient's rank, name and unit (1088 Serg[t] G. Youngson 72nd High[RS]), inclusive of suspension 42.6 mm (h) x 36.2 mm (w), very fine condition. 

Footnote:  The Medal was instituted on 19 March 1881. It was awarded to members of the British and Indian armies who served in Afghanistan between 1878 and 1880 during the Second Afghan War. Plain silver clasps were awarded and the maximum number of clasps awarded to any one man was four.
