Institution Date: June 1, 1847. In silver, with name officially impressed along the rim “J. Smitzer, Canadn Militia”, on period ribbon with a Fort Detroit clasp, about very fine with rim nicks, several contact marks and bruises. (Appears on Medal Rolls as "Smilzer")
Footnote: Private John Smitzer of the 3rd York Unit, Fort Detroit was named on the roll of Canadian Recipients of the Military General Service Medal.
The conflict at Fort Detroit was an early conflict during the War of 1812. On August 16, 1812 the British proclaimed a major victory at Fort Detroit under the guidance of Sir Isaac Brock and support by Native American allies, resulting in a major loss for the Americans led by General William Hull.
