A sterling silver presentation box presented to Major J.R. Douglas by the Officers of the Special Air Service Regiment on the occasion of his marriage, dated June 16th, 1952, consisting of a box with a wooden core and a sterling silver exterior, the exterior of the lid is engraved, the interior with dual compartments, hallmarked with an Anchor by the Birmingham Assay Office, along with a lion hallmark indicating “.925” silver purity, along with the letter B for “1951”, maker marked “JBC & S LD” for manufacture by JB Chatterley & Sons and marked “Made in England”, measuring 169 mm (w) x 112 mm (l), in near very fine condition.
Accompanied by a Special Air Service Regiment patch, constructed of a black wool backer with silver bullion wire and cotton embroidery in the shape of a double winged sword with the motto “Who Dares Wins”, with a black cloth backer, measuring 35 mm (w) x 45 mm (l)., in near very fine condition.
Footnote: The Special Air Service (SAS) is a special forces unit of the British Army. It was founded in 1941 and was reconstituted as a corps in 1950. The unit specializes in counter-terrorism, hostage rescue, direct action, and special reconnaissance. Much of the information about the SAS is highly classified due to the secrecy and sensitivity of its operations.
