A Queen’s South Africa Medal, in silver, rim officially impressed 9779 PTE T. SHELLY, K.K.R.C., with TUGELA HEIGHTS, RELIEF OF LADYSMITH, TRANSVAAL and LAING’S NEK clasps, a private SOUTH AFRICA clasp has been pinned to the ribbon, reverse bears the ghost dates 1899 1900 denoting the early issue of the medal, a few edge knocks and minor contact marks, remains in extremely fine condition.
A British War Medal, in silver, rim impressed 21095 PTE. T. SHELLY. R. WAR. R., very minor contact, bright, in extremely fine condition.
A Victory Medal, in bronze gilt, rim impressed 21095 PTE. T. SHELLY. R. WAR. R., very minor contact and small areas of gilt wear, in extremely fine condition.
An Army Temperance Medal India, in silver, measures 34.5 mm (w) x 40 mm (h), original ribbon with EXCELSIOR: clasp with vertical pin back, light contact marks and staining to ribbon, remains extremely fine.
An Army Temperance Association Medal for Five Years Sobriety, in silver and blue enamels, measures 42.5 mm (w) x 53.3 mm (h), worn on original ribbon, minor flecks to enamels, remains in extremely fine condition.
An Army Temperance Association Membership Medal, in silver, measures 34.8 mm (w) x 40 mm (h), worn on a QSA ribbon, light wear, very fine.
Accompanied by a FIDELITY clasp with vertical pin, very fine.
Footnote: Pte T. Shelly is on the Queen’s South Africa Medal Roll, serving with the 2nd Battalion King’s Royal Rifles Corps, and was entitled to the four clasps shown above.
Thomas Shelly served with the Royal Warwickshire Regiment during the First War. He later served with the Royal Defence Corps (regiment no. 64215). He was reported wounded on March 6, 1917 in the London Times and Birmingham Gazette.
