Hardcover, pickle green cloth cover, the text and graphics on the cover and spine in black, beige and gold-coloured inks, entitled "Stories of the Victoria Cross and the Humane Society", by Frank Mundell, author of "The 'Daring Deeds' Library", "The 'Heroines' Library", "The 'Adventure' Series", etc., published by the Sunday School Union of London, printed by Morrison & Gibb Limited of Edinburgh in 1909. The book itself is divided into two books: the first book is entitled "Stories of the Victoria Cross". It begins with a Table of Contents, followed by a List of Illustrations and contains twenty-five Chapters: I - The Victoria Cross; II - Heroes of the Alma; III - Heroes of Inkerman; IV - The Noble Six Hundred; V - The Lady with the Lamp; VI - The Gallant Nine; VII - Three to One; VIII - Humane and Brave; IX - A Brave Surgeon; X - The Hero of Kolapore; XI - "Lucknow" Kavanagh; XII - Breaking the Square; XIII - Storming the Takoo Forts; XIV - Storming of the Gate Pah; XV - Saving the Colours; XVI - The Heroic Defence of Rorke's Drift; XVII - Storming of the Inhlobane Mountain; XVIII - The Attack of the Morosi's Mountain; XIX - A Desperate Encounter; XX - Lieutenant Hamilton's Bravery; XXI - The Battle of Maiwand; XXII - The Battle of El Tee; XXIII - The Battle of Abu Klea; XXIV - The Hero of Manipur; XXV - In South Africa. The second book is entitled "The Humane Society". It begins with a Preface, followed by a Table of Contents, a List of Illustrations and contains eighteen Chapters: I - The Royal Humane Society; II - A Brave Foreman; III - The Hero of the "Water Nymph"; IV - A Famous Swimmer; V - Other Stanhope Medallists; VI - The Heroine of the Longstone; VII - A Titled Medallist; VIII - Presence of Mind; IX - The Hero of the Humber; X - A Long Swim; XI - Amis Storm and Darkness; XII - An Australian Grace Darling; XIII - A Southend Hero; XIV - A Life for a Life; XV - On Thin Ice; XVI - A Notable Feat; XVII - Heroes of Recent Years; XVIII - A Visit to the Receiving House. It concludes with a List of Silver Medals for 1905-07 and a List of Silver Medals for 1884-1904. The book contains 256 pages, with detailed text complemented by a few line drawings, printed in black ink, on an off-white paper stock, the top of the pages in gold-leaf, the front endpaper stamped in blue ink "E.C. CONGRESSIONAL CHURCH / SABBATH SCHOOL / ARDROSSAN" and is named in black ink to "Jessie McBean" and dated "Xmas 1913", measuring 125 mm (w) x 190 mm (h) x 50 mm (d). The lead page with a line drawing illustrating "Queen Victoria presenting the Victoria Cross in Hyde Park, June 1856" has come away from the body of the book, the pages themselves having yellowed over time. Very fine.
