Description
Hardcover, black cloth cover, entitled "Roll of the Indian Medical Service 1615-1930", compiled by Lieutenant-Colonel Dirom Grey Crawford, Bengal Medical Service, Retired, published by W. Thacker and Company of London in 1930, printed in Great Britain by William Clowes & Sons, Limited of London and Beccles. The book is marked "This is a limited edition of 200 copies" and is dedicated "To the memory of the thousands forgotten, of the few faintly remembered, who, during the past three centuries, have served their King and Country in the Indian Medical Service, these brief records of their careers are dedicated." It begins with a Preface, followed by an Addenda et Corrigenda, a Table of Contents, a List of Abbreviations and an Introduction that states that the "introduction is a continuation of the History of the IMS and consists partly of notes on the events and changes of the past fifteen years, partly of supplementary information about former times, which has come to hand since the History was published." The majority of the book deals with the Roll of the Indian Medical Service, containing the names of 6,156 officers, each chapter with the names of the individuals in boldface type, in order by date, with a brief biography that includes the individual's respective service where known. It is divided into nine chapters: I - Bengal, 1645-1896, with Appendix I, Bengal, Extra Names; II - Madras, 1630-1896, with Appendix I, Madras, Extra Names; III - Bombay, 1613-1896, with Appendix I, Bombay, Extra Names; IV - General List, 1897-1930; V - Eastern Factories, 1605-1775; VI - Sumatra or West Coast, 1696-1825; VII - St. Helena, 1684-1831; VIII - China, 1763-1834; IX - Prince of Wales Island. The top of the pages exhibit foxing, with light soiling present on the side and bottom edges of the pages, in addition to a small nip in the cloth covering on the top edge of the front cover, the pages themselves remaining unaffected.
