Description
Description
Hardcover, forest green cloth cover, with dust jacket, the text on the spine in gold-coloured ink, entitled "British Pistols and Guns 1640-1840", by Ian Glendenning, copyrighted by the author in 1951 and 1967, original published in 1951, this New (Second) Edition published in the United States by Arco Publishing Company Inc. of New York in 1967, printed in England, Library of Congress Catalog Card Number 67-18416, Arco Catalog Number 1646. As stated on the dust jacket: "The special, perhaps unique, feature of this book is its thirty-four full-page illustrations (comprising thirty-four photographs and seventy-one drawings). In order that the plates be reproduced to their best advantage, the book has been designed in album format. Twenty-nine of these plates are fine photographs of examples of small arms, with drawings showing details of their furniture and decoration, and they are described in the minutest detail. This new edition is reproduced in facsimile from the original edition, which has been long unattainable and is much sought after by historians, libraries and collectors of firearms." It begins with an Introduction, followed by a Table of Contents. The book is divided into thirty-five chapters: I - A Short History of Firearms; II - Observations on Barrel Interiors and on Loading Muzzle-Loading Arms; III - Notes on Powder Flasks; IV - Glossary; V - Flintlock Pistol circa 1660-1700 Sidelock Flintlock; VI - Flintlock Pistol circa 1680-1702 Sidelock Flintlock; VII - Flintlock Pistol circa 1720-1730 Sidelock Flintlock; VIII - Flintlock Pistol circa 1720 Sidelock Flintlock; IX - Flintlock Pistol circa 1750-1760 Sidelock Flintlock; X - Flintlock Pistol circa 1720 Cannon Barrel Sidelock; XI - Flintlock Pistol circa 1730-1750 Cannon Barrel Sidelock; XII - Flintlock Pistol circa 1750-1760 Cannon Barrel Sidelock; XIII - Flintlock Pistol circa 1776-1781 Cannon Barrel Sidelock; XIV - Flintlock Pistol circa 1782 Cannon Barrel Under-and-Over Boxlock; XV - Flintlock Pistol circa 1784-1785 Cannon Barrel Side-by-side Boxlock; XVI - Flintlock Pistol circa 1785 Sidelock Fullstock; XVII - Flintlock Pistol circa 1795-1797 Sidelock Fullstock; XVIII - Flintlock Pistol circa 1795 Sidelock Fullstock; XIX - Flintlock Pistols circa 1800-1810, 1813-1825, Boxlocks, Pocket, double and single; XX - Flintlock Pistol circa 1813-1820 Sidelock Halfstock Saw Handle; XXI - Flintlock Pistol circa 1820-1835 Sidelock Halfstock; XXII - Flintlock Pistol Conversion to Percussion circa 1825-1830 Sidelock Fullstock; XXIII - Percussion Pistol Back Action Back Action circa 1834-1844; XXIV - English Lock or Dog-Lock Musket circa 1640 Fullstock; XXV - Flintlock Fowling Piece circa 1690 Fullstock; XXVI - Flintlock Fowling Piece circa 1700-1715 Fullstock; XXVII - Flintlock Fowling Piece circa 1750-1760 Fullstock; XXVIII - Flintlock Blunderbuss with Spring Bayonet circa 1782 Fullstock; XXIX - Flintlock Fowling Piece circa 1785-1790 Halfstock; XXX - Flintlock Breech-Loading Rifle circa (1702) 1800 Fullstock; XXXI - Double-Barrelled Flintlock Shotgun circa 1805 Halfstock Side-by-side; XXXII - Flintlock Muzzle-Loading Rifle circa 1815 Fullstock; XXXIII - Percussion Muzzle-Loading Rifle circa 1840-1850 Halfstock; XXXIV - Percussion Muzzle-Loading Double-Barrelled Shotgun 1840-50 Halfstock Side-by-side; XXXV - Explanatory Notes, Reference and a List of names appearing on Firearms manufactured in the British Isles during the Period 1640-1840. It exhibits foxing and soiling on the edges of the pages and on the inside front cover endpaper, the dust jacket having experienced edge wear and tears along with sunning, however, the pages within remain unaffected. Very fine.
