Description
Description
(Erinnerungs-Dolch mit Etui). A unique commemorative service dagger to a serviceman attached to the Imperial Navy headquarters (and later Reichsmarine Baltic Fleet headquarters) at Kiel, measuring 26 cm in total length. It features a 15.5 cm-long, nickel-plated, magnetic steel blade with a sharpened tip. The obverse bears intricate acid-etched designs, consisting of a central fouled anchor flanked by arabesques and a tall ship. The ricasso also bears a mark of “SOLINGEN”, indicating production by a manufacturer headquartered in the city synonymous with the German edged weapons industry. A nickel-plated crossguard transitions into a multi-piece hilt, consisting of a magnetic steel core fastened with two ribbed magnetic metal fixtures and two light-brown celluloid inserts, one of which composes the handle grip. Accompanying the dagger is its original case of issues, constructed of a wooden frame with a faux black leather exterior liner. The lid bears a gilt inscription of “KIEL 3. NOV. 1918-1928”, indicating ten years of service by a recipient whose tenure notably commenced during the closing stages of the Kiel Mutiny, which was part of the wider German Revolution of 1918-1919. The interior features a padded white satin lid liner and intact hinge cover, with a depressed blue velvet bed. The case closes with a functional metal spring catch with exterior stud release. Unmarked, it measures 10.5 cm (w) x 31.5 cm (l) x 3.5 (h). Demonstrating only moderat material fatigue to the case, this unusual dagger presented as a long service memento to an individual who served at a key naval facility remains in an extremely fine condition.
