Germany, SS. A First Pattern Overseas Cap, Field-Grey Version, c. 1938

(SS Feldmütze, 1. Modell). An extremely well-preserved first pattern SS overseas cap, constructed of field-grey wool. The cap is fully surrounded by fold-down side walls which slope downward toward the front. Stitched onto the left side of the walls is an insignia consisting of a black wool backer overlaid by a machine-embroidered, silver-grey, SS-style German national eagle clutching a mobile swastika, measuring 90 mm (w) x 42 mm (h). Pinned onto the peak is a grey -painted aluminum button bearing a raised Totenkopf on the obverse, with the reverse stamped with dual Sig runes, a Reichszeugmeisterei (RZM) logo, and maker code “63” for Steinhauer & Lück, Lüdenscheid. The interior retains an intact RZM label bearing a maker code of “142” and secondary code of “51245”, above a black ink size mark of “57” and below a depot mark for the year 1938. The cap measures approximately 28 cm (l) x 12 cm (h) when folded on a flat surface. Demonstrating no notable damage or wear (with the exception of a replacement bar for the button’s lug), this late first issue example remains in an extremely fine condition.
