Germany, SA. A Model 1933 Service Dagger, Late-Period Example, by E. & F. Hörster

(Sturmabteilung Dienstdolch M33). A Sturmabteilung (SA) Model 1933 Service Dagger, measuring 37 cm in total length when inserted into the scabbard. It features a 22.5 cm-long, nickel-plated, magnetic steel blade which retains factory-original sharpening to the edges and tip. The obverse bears an acid-etched inscription of “ALLES FÜR DEUTSCHLAND” (“EVERYTHING FOR GERMANY”) in Fraktur script. The reverse ricasso is marked with a Reichszeugmeisterei (RZM) logo and maker code “M7/36” for E. & F. Hörster, Solingen. The blade sits securely within a nickel-plated zink alloy crossguard which is marked with eight notches, distributed in groups of four at both the top and bottom. The handle grip is composed of a single piece of dark brown lacquered wood which is carved into a curvature for a comfortable grip. Inset into the obverse of the handle is a silvered German national eagle clutching a wreathed mobile swastika, measuring 25 mm (w) x 15 mm (h). Also inset into the obverse of the pommel is a partially-silvered SA insignia measuring 9 mm in diameter. The dagger completes with a nickel-plated zink alloy lower crossguard, similarly marked with eight notches, which retains a rounded pommel nut that maintains the dagger’s structural integrity. Accompanying the dagger is a period scabbard, constructed of a brown painted magnetic metal shaft. Nickel-plated non-magnetic metal fixtures are secured to both the tip and throat with side rivets. Emanating from the latter is a loop for the accommodation of a hanger. A functional spring catch situated within the throat firmly holds the dagger in place during storage. Issues consistent with age and repair are evident, and include some running marks and sporadic tarnishing to the blade, total loss of nickel plating to the hilt fixtures, a crack to the handle grip adjacent to the upper crossguard (along with possible replacement or refurbishment of the handle itself), and some denting of the scabbard tip, with the scabbard itself showing evidence of earlier issue. This late-period dagger remains in a fair condition.
