Description
Description
(Luftwaffe Einheitsfeldmütze M43 für Generäle). A rare and extremely well-preserved Luftwaffe General’s Bergmütze-style M43 field cap, constructed of dark slate-grey wool. The cap is surrounded by fold-down side panels, scalloped toward the front, which provide optional ear and neck protection to the wearer. When not in use, the panels are rolled up and secured in palace at the front with a single gilded magnetic metal button which emanates from the right side and fits through a reinforced buttonhole on the left. A length of golden-yellow celleon piping trims the outer edge of the crown, which is also flanked on each side by ventilation holes reinforced with magnetic metal grommets. Stitched onto the peak is an insignia consisting of a dark slate-grey wool backer bearing a hand-embroidered golden-yellow celleon wire Luftwaffe eagle clutching a mobile swastika, measuring 70 mm (w) x 40 mm (h). Directly below the eagle, the front also bears a machine-embroidered tri-colour cockade executed in silver aluminum wire and rayon threading, trimmed with a gilded wire border. A protruding visor completes the exterior features, and consists of a rigid card stock core fully trimmed in identical wool. A multi-piece dark slate-grey rayon liner encompasses the interior, while a brown leather sweatband extends across the forehead. A palpable internal reinforcement is set in place at the front to maintain the structural integrity of the peak. A size mark of “58” is stamped onto the crown in black ink. Otherwise unmarked, the cap measures approximately 19 cm (w) x 27 cm (l) x 16 cm (h). Minor issues consistent with age and field wear are evident, and include sporadic soiling and material fatigue to the wool base, some oxidation of the vent grommets, and bending of the visor core. This scarce and high-quality cap remains in an extremely fine condition.
