Constructed of aluminum, the lid bearing a hand-engraved Luftwaffe eagle clutching a mobile swastika situated above a date of “OKT. 1943”, circumscribed by an inscription of “ZUR ERINNERUNG AN DIE WACHE - GEFANGEN LAGER GRUMELLE DEL PIANO”, the base bearing a hand-engraved map of the Mediterranean and its coastal regions, opening with a functional hinge to reveal a plain interior, unmarked, measuring 7.5 cm (w) x 9.5 cm (l) x 1 cm (h), an interesting and scarce memento from a Luftwaffe guard assigned to duties at a POW camp in Italy in extremely fine condition.
