Description
Description
(Luftwaffe Dienstrock für einen Hauptmann der Fliegertruppe). An interesting and well-preserved Luftwaffe Flight Personnel Hauptmann service tunic, constructed of a dark grey cotton/rayon blended cloth. It features a turned-down collar which is trimmed along the outer edge with twisted and rolled silver aluminum wire piping, and transitions into dual breast lapels. The collar is flanked by tabs constructed of golden-yellow wool with buckram cores, trimmed with silver aluminum wire piping, bearing three silver aluminum wire gulls above an oak leaf wreath, and measuring 40 mm (w) x 55 mm (l). The shoulders are flanked by boards constructed of golden-yellow wool with rigid card stock cores, topped by four bands of silver aluminum wire piping, and pinned with two gilded pips. Each measuring 30 mm (w) x 110 mm (l), the shoulders are fixed in place with machine stitching at the outer edge and with pebbled aluminum buttons on the inner edge. A pocket is set into the lower half of each breast flap, opening with a reinforced horizontal slash. Stitched onto the upper right breast is an insignia consisting of a dark grey wool backer bearing a hand-embroidered silver aluminum wire droptail-style Luftwaffe eagle clutching a mobile swastika, measuring 85 mm (w) x 60 mm (h). Stitched onto the left breast is an Officer-grade cloth Pilot’s Badge, constructed of padded dark grey wool with silver aluminum wire hand embroidery, measuring 70 mm (w) x 60 mm (h). Two sets of loops are also set into the upper left breast, with one retaining a ribbon bar measuring 105 mm in length, and featuring (in non-regulation order) a Spanish Military Merit Cross, a Commemorative Medal for the Campaign of 1936-1939, a Wehrmacht Long Service Award with first pattern Luftwaffe device, and an Anschluss Medal. The tunic closes with four black bakelite buttons on the right breast meeting an equal number of hidden and reinforced buttonholes on the left. The interior is fully encompassed by a slate-grey rayon liner which transitions into a pinstripe design through the arms. Two pockets are set into the breasts and are reinforced with quilted material. The tunic measures approximately 42 cm across the shoulders, with an arm length of 58 cm, and an overall body length of 62 cm when folded on a flat surface. Minor material fatigue is visible to both the base material and insignia, while the tunic demonstrates evidence of refurbishment and replacement of both the badges and insignia. This unusual example worn by a decorated Condor Legion veteran remains in a better than very fine condition.
