Germany, Kriegsmarine. A POW Trench Art Model U-Boat

(Grabenkunst U-Boot Modell). An interesting trench art U-Boat model constructed by a German prisoner of war (POW) in Allied custody, constructed of wood with a faithful dark grey paint scheme, with tower, pericopes, and swivel deck guns, in addition two original spinning propellers, bearing hand-painted dedications of “589” (a Type VIIC vessel which carried out seven patrols and sank one ship for 417 gross register tons before being sunk by Royal Navy ships on 14 September 1942 with all hands lost), affixed to a black painted wooden pedestal with a felt base to mitigate surface scratching, unmarked, one small piece has broken off and is retained along with the two propellers which sit loose on their mounts, additional scratching is visible throughout, and the obverse of the pedestal demonstrates a void which likely held a plaque bearing a maker’s dedication, a superb example of POW camp art in better than very fine condition.
