Germany, Kriegsmarine. A Junior Officer’s Visor Cap

(Kriegsmarine dunkelblau Schirmmütze für Offiziere Leutnant zur See bis Kapitänleutnant). A very well-preserved Kriegsmarine visor cap for junior Officers (Leutnant zur See-Kapitänleutnant), constructed of dark navy blue wool. It features reinforced side walls which are fully lined on the exterior with a ribbed black mohair cap band. Stitched onto the centre of the cap band is an insignia consisting of a padded dark navy blue wool backer bearing a gold bullion wire oak wreath, in turn surrounding a tri-colour cockade, measuring 65 mm (w) x 60 mm (h). The lower edge of the cap band is flanked by gilded brass buttons bearing fouled anchors, in turn accommodating a multi-piece black leather chinstrap. A protruding vulcanfibre visor completes the exterior features, and is topped by a layer of dark navy blue wool and trimmed along the outer edge with a scalloped gold bullion wire tresse. The interior is encompassed by a multi-piece blue rayon liner, while a wide grey leather sweatband surrounds the walls and is perforated with ventilation holes across the forehead. An intact transparent plastic rhomboid moisture guard is stitched onto the crown. Unmarked, the cap measures 24 cm (w) x 28 cm (l) x 16 cm (h). The eagle insignia formerly in place on the peak has been removed with no evident disruption to the underlying material, and the cap remains in an extremely fine condition.
