Description
Description
(Heer Schirmmütze für Mannschaften der Infanterie). An interesting and well-preserved Heer Infantry EM/NCO’s visor cap, constructed of field-grey wool. It features reinforced wide walls which are fully lined on the exterior with a dark green wool cap band. Both the top and bottom edges of the band are trimmed with white piping, while an additional length of identical piping surrounds the outer edge of the crown. Pinned onto the peak is a silvered tombak insignia consisting of a first pattern Wehrmacht eagle clutching a wreathed mobile swastika, measuring 50 mm (w) x 30 mm (h). Directly below the eagle, the centre of the cap band is pinned with a two-piece aluminum tri-colour cockade and oak leaf wreath, measuring 62 mm (w) x 40 mm (h). The lower edge of the band is flanked by blackened magnetic metal studs which accommodate a multi-piece black leatherette chinstrap, itself adjusted with two blackened magnetic metal buckles. A protruding vulcanfibre visor completes the exterior features, and is finished in black on the obverse and in brown on the reverse. The interior is encompassed by a multi-piece brown rayon liner, while a brown leather sweatband surrounds the interior of the walls. Stamped onto the crown is a mark of “NO 55”, while the sweatband folds down to reveal a partially-legible maker’s mark and manufacture date of “1942”. The cap measures approximately 24 cm (w) x 25 cm (l) x 13.5 cm (h). Issues consistent with age and refurbishment are evident, and include replacement of the insignia and minor fatigue of the leather/leatherette fixtures. The cap remains in a better than very fine condition.
