Germany, Heer. A Narvik Shield, Type 3

(Narvikschild). Constructed of silvered zink, the obverse consisting of a shield bearing a raised propeller, anchor, and edelweiss, representing the Luftwaffe, Kriegsmarine, and Heer (Gebirgsjäger), respectively, flanked by a date of “1940”, and topped by an inscription of “NARVIK” and German national eagle perched on top of a wreathed swastika, affixed with all four cruciform attachment prongs to a magnetic metal backplate with a field-grey wool liner and black paper backer, unmarked, the shield measuring 41.17 mm (w) x 91.82 mm (h), demonstrating loss of finish and some surface oxidation to the obverse of the shield, the latter resulting in some deterioration to the centre of the propeller and edelweiss, as well as the lower right edge of the shield, in very fine condition.
