Description
Description
(Deutsches Rotes Kreuz Schutzhelm M34 für Mannschaften). An unusual and well-preserved German Red Cross (DRK) personnel Stahlhelm (steel helmet)/Schutzhelm, constructed of a single sheet of magnetic molybdenum steel which retains virtually all of a period olive-drab paint textured with fine wood dust. Four rivets are distributed around the outer circumference for the accommodation of the interior fixtures, while three additional rivets distributed over the crown and at the back cover eyelets perforated into the shell for the inclusion of a comb when utilized as intended by Feuerschutzpolizei personnel. The helmet is flanked on each side by dual ventilation outlets consisting of clusters of seven perforations. Situated below the left vents is an unusual painted decal consisting of a white shield bearing a black and red German Red Cross-style eagle above a unit attribution of “NO 32”, while the area below the right vents additionally features a painted white shield bearing a red Geneva Cross defaced by a white mobile swastika, similarly situated above a dedication of “NO 32”. Each decal measures 38 mm (w) x 48 mm (h) and demonstrates expert application. The edge of the skirt is fully crimped, providing a smooth edge. The interior features a light brown leather liner which culminates in nine fingers, each perforated at the top with an eyelet for the inclusion of a drawstring. Two metal rings emanate from the sides of the liner for the accommodation of a multi-piece blackened leather chinstrap, itself adjusted with a metal buckle and closed with a functional spring catch. Both the crown and side of the interior retain mostly-intact labels featuring instructions for personnel, while the back of the skirt bears a handwritten inscription of “NO 32 FELDLAZARETT ST. MARIAE”. Otherwise unmarked, the helmet measures approximately 21.5 cm (w) x 27.5 cm (l) x 15.5 cm (h). Demonstrating no notable damage or wear, this interesting helmet, repurposed from a variant commonly worn by Feuerschutzpolizei personnel, remains in an extremely fine condition.
