Description
Description
(Waffen-SS Leibstandarte A.H. Oberscharführer Dienstrock). A well-preserved example of a service tunic to an Oberscharführer of the 1st SS Panzer Division Leibstandarte A.H. It is constructed of thick field-grey wool with a turned-down collar that transitions into double breasted lapels, flanked on each side by collar tabs. The collar is decorated with a strip of silver aluminum bullion embroidered tresse with the tabs constructed of a buckram core with a black wool upper. The right tab features a set of SS runes constructed of twisted silver aluminum bullion embroidery. The left tab features two silvered aluminum rank pips, which together with the tresse denote the rank of Oberscharführer. The shoulders are topped with slip-on style shoulder straps constructed of black wool, with bright yellow Waffenfarbe piping and a strip of silver aluminum bullion tresse along the edges of straps. They are secured in place via a broad loop sewn to the tunic, as well as a pebbled silvered zink button per side. On the left sleeve on the top third section of the tunic is a fine quality NCO’s SS eagle, constructed of a cotton core with fine BeVo style silver aluminum wire embroidery. Near the left cuff are the remains of where the “Leibstandarte” cuff-title used to be sewn to the tunic, leaving behind partial threads as well as minuscule needle holes. The front of the tunic features a total of four pleated pockets, two at breast height and two at waist height. All pockets are secured shut via a scalloped flap and a pebbled silvered zink button. It features a series of four matching pebbled silvered zink buttons that are met by reinforced buttonholes on the opposing side. At the top loophole is a ribbon for the Winter Battle in the East 1941-1942 medal. The interior is partially lined with olive-drab coloured cotton drill material, reinforcing the insides in critical spots, including for the sewn-in belt loops. It is marked with standard German size stamps with the manufacturer location above (Koblenz) and the issuing depot stamp “M41” (Munich, 1941). The other stamps are Rissian markings, including a serial number given to the item at capture and museum control numbers. Uniquely, this tunic is supplied with a museum tag at the neck giving more capture details. This tunic measures approximately 42 cm across the shoulders (seam to seam), with a sleeve length of 61 cm, and an overall body length of 77 cm. It is in extremely well-preserved condition, with light material fatigue and with only small moth nips in select areas. It is complete except for the “Leibstandarte” cuff-title, and in overall better than extremely fine condition.
Footnote: This tunic is supplied by a hardcopy version of “Waffen-SS Uniforms & Insignia” by Wade Krawczyk and Peter v Lukacs, where it is featured on pages 56 and 57. Since photography, the Iron Cross 1939 Second Class ribbon has been removed, and the Military Police/Gendarmerie (Orange Waffenfarbe) straps have been swapped for Signals Troops (Yellow Waffenfarbe) shoulder straps of equal rank.
