Germany, HJ. A Summer Field Cap

(HJ-Sommermütze). An extremely well-preserved HJ Sommermütze (summer field cap), also known as a Lagermütze (camp cap), constructed of beige cotton. It is surrounded by decorative side panels which are fully trimmed along the top edge with a length of red cotton piping. Stitched onto the peak is a machine-embroidered silver-grey HJ style German national eagle clutching a wreathed black mobile swastika, measuring 35 mm (w) x 30 mm (h). Directly below the eagle, the cap is pinned with an enameled HJ insignia measuring 15 mm (w) x 25 mm (h), and marked and the reverse with a Reichszeugmeisterei (RZM) logo and maker code “M1/8” for Ferdinand Wagner, Pforzhiem. The interior is encompassed by a multi-piece beige rayon liner, and surrounded by a brown leather sweatband. An RZM label is visible behind the latter, and is stamped with a maker’s code of “79”. The cap measures approximately 29.5 cm (w) x 10.5 cm (h) when folded on a flat surface. Minor material fatigue consistent with age and light wear is visible, but the cap remains in an overall extremely fine condition.
