Germany, RAD. A Subordinate’s Hewer, by Solinger Axt- und Hauerfabrik

(Reichsarbeitsdienst Hauer für Mannschaften und Unterführer). A well-preserved Reichsarbeitsdienst (Reich Labour Service/RAD) subordinate’s hewer, measuring 39.5 cm in total length when inserted into the scabbard. It features a 24.5 cm-long, nickel-plated, tapering magnetic steel blade with a sharpened tip and narrow fuller running the majority of the length of each side. Acid-etched onto the obverse is an inscription of “ARBEIT ADELT” (“LABOUR ENNOBLES”) in Fraktur script. The reverse ricasso bears a maker’s mark of “SOLINGER AXT- UND HAUERFABRIK”, circumscribing the firm’s horse logo, topped by a Reichsleitung des Reichsarbeitsdienstes (RLAD) insignia. It sits securely within a nickel-plated magnetic metal hilt with a quillon and hooked pommel. Two pieces of polished staghorn compose the handle grip, and are held in place with dual non-magnetic metal rivets. It is accompanied by its original scabbard, constructed of a black painted magnetic metal shaft, with nickel-plated magnetic fixtures secured to both the tip and throat. The former bears double-sided etched RAD insignia, while the latter features etched knotted and ribbed designs. An integral loop emanating from the side of the throat fixture accommodates a period original hanger, constructed of blackened leather and adjusted with a functional buckle. The throat also retains a functional spring catch to firmly hold the hewer in place during storage. Issues consistent with age and wear are evident, and include some running marks to the blade, some scratching of the metal fixtures, and significant fatigue to the hanger which remains structurally intact. An example produced by a scarce and desirable manufacturer, this hewer is in a near extremely fine condition.
