Germany, Heer. A Wehrpaß to Paul Maiwald, Construction and Security Units with Western and Eastern Front Combat

(Heer Wehrpaß). Constructed of a field-grey card stock binding with 52 paginated interior pages filled with handwritten, typewritten, and stamped entries, retaining a certified black-and-white studio portrait of Maiwald, measuring 10.5 cm (w) x 14.5 cm (h), demonstrating only minor signs of material fatigue, in extremely fine condition.

Footnote: Paul Maiwald was born on 1 August 1901 and, too young to serve during the  First World War, became available for Wehrmacht service in 1938 at Schweidnitz. He served with a number of construction and engineering units, including Straßen-Bau-Bataillon 680, Bau-Bataillon 114, and Bau-Ersatz-Bataillon 28. Trained on the Karabiner 98k rifle, Maiwald attained the rank of Gefreiter on 1 August 1941 and received espionage training certified on 5 January 1940. He notably saw extensive service on both the Western and Eastern Fronts, providing security on Germany’s western border following the Anglo-French declaration of war, before participating in the campaign of spring 1940, where he saw action in the Netherlands, Belgium, and France, the latter including the Battle of Dunkirk. Maiwald was later transferred east, and was assigned to a security unit in the Generalgouvernement (occupied Poland), before being deployed to the Soviet Union during Operation Barbarossa. His final recorded combat service places him in the buildup to the Battle of Lyuban (also known as the Battle of the Volkhov).  A handwritten entry and typewritten letter addressed to Maiwald’s wife, Elfriede, confirm that he died of illness on 13 June 1942 in a field hospital.
