Germany, Luftwaffe. A Lot of Award Documents to Hauptmann Harald Roemer, Battle of Britain Spitfire Kill

(Luftwaffe Verleihungsurkunden). A superb lot of award documents and photos from the estate of Leutnant/Oberleutnant (later Hauptmann) Harald Roemer, including: 

1. An award document for a Pilot’s Badge, named to Roemer as a Fähnrich, issued from Berlin on 17 August 1938, certified by the handwritten signature of an unidentified Oberst representing the Supreme Commander of the Luftwaffe, measuring 20.5 cm (w) x 29.5 cm (h), demonstrating a central folding crease, with minor discolouration and fatigue to the lower edge, in near extremely fine condition.

2. An award document for a Sudetenland Medal, named to Roemer as a Leutnant of III./Zerstörergeschwader Nr. 26 “Horst Wessel”, issued from Münster on 26 August 1939, certified by the handwritten signature of then-Oberst Kurt-Bertram von Döring (later Generalleutnant; German Cross in Gold 30 December 1942), measuring 21 cm (w) x 29.5 cm (h), demonstrating some folding creases, in near extremely fine condition.

3. An award document for a Fighter Clasp, Bronze Grade, named to Roemer as an Oberleutnant, issued from headquarters on 25 May 1941, certified by the handwritten signature of Major Karl Kaschka (who represented Austria in fencing at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, and who was killed in action on 4 December 1941 when he was shot down by a Royal Air Force Hawker Hurricane near Tobruk, Libya, while serving with Zerstörergeschwader 26), flanked by the stamp of III./Zerstörergeschwader Horst Wessel Nr. 142, measuring 15 cm (w) x 21 cm (h), demonstrating minor discolouration, in near extremely fine condition.

4. An award document for the 1939 Iron Cross I. Class, named to Roemer as an Oberleutnant, issued from headquarters on 3 October 1941, certified by the handwritten signature of General der Flieger Gustav Kastner-Kirdorf, measuring 14 cm (w) x 20 cm (h), demonstrating minor discolouration, in near extremely fine condition.

5. A pay book extract, featuring a certified studio portrait of Roemer in the uniform of a Leutnant, with handwritten entries indicating that he was born on 12 October 1916 in Kiel, featuring a stamped date of 13 January 1946, measuring 10.5 cm (w) x 14 cm (h), also accompanied by three photos sized approximately 9.5 cm (w) x 6.5 cm (h), with one depicting Roemer among a group of Luftwaffe personnel, one showing a Luftwaffe Messerschmitt Bf 110 in mid-flight, and one depicting Roemer at the helm of what is presumably the same aircraft, in overall extremely fine condition.

Footnote: Luftwaffe records indicate that Harald Roemer achieved two aerial victories while serving with Zerstörergeschwader 26, which notably includes a Royal Air Force Spitfire on 10 July 1940, during the opening stages of the Battle of Britain, while his unit was engaged with convoys in the English Channel. Roemer was killed on 20 February 1944 near Eschwege, presumably in combat with Anglo-American forces during Operation Argument (also known as “Big Week”), a massive combined air assault on Germany intended to soften the Luftwaffe in advance of D-Day.
