The collection consists of: a Close Combat Clasp in Bronze award document (140x200mm, very fine); an Iron Cross 2nd Class award document (141x200mm, very fine); a General Assault Badge award document (146x210mm, near very fine); a Wound Badge in Black award document (148x210mm, better than fine); an Eastern Front Medal award document (140x199mm, very fine); a Feldpost letter to his sister (141x175mm, better than very fine).
The Close Combat Clasp in Bronze document is named to Obergefreiter (Corporal) Birk of the 2nd Company of Pionier Battalion 111. It is dated to May 22, 1944 and signed in blue ink by the Battalion Commander, Captain Kuhn.
The Iron Cross 2nd Class document is named to Pionier Birk of the 2nd Company of Pionier Battalion 111. It is dated to October 12, 1942 and signed in black ink by the Commander of the 111th Infantry Division, Major General Hermann Recknagel (1892–1945), a recipient of the Knight’s Cross with Swords.
The General Assault Badge document is named to Gefreiter (Lance Corporal) Birk of the 2nd Company of Pionier Battalion 111. It is dated to November 1, 1942 and signed in black ink by the Commander of Pionier Battalion 111, Major Wilhelm.
The Wound Badge in Black document is named to Obergefreiter Birk of Pionier Battalion 111 for being wounded once on August 10, 1943. It is dated to November 4, 1943 and signed once more by Captain Kuhn.
The Eastern Front Medal document is named to Gefreiter Birk and dated to August 11, 1942. This document is also signed by Captain Kuhn.
The letter is dated to June 2, 1942 and was sent from Russia. Birk is hoping for a quick victory over the Russians, and he praises the summer weather after the harsh winter conditions. He states that he is doing well, except for a swollen foot that doesn’t allow him to put on a boot.
