Description
(Sturmabteilung Dienstdolch M33). A rare Sturmabteilung (SA) Model 1933 Service Dagger, measuring 37 cm in total length when inserted into the scabbard. It features a 22 cm-long, nickel-plated, magnetic steel blade which retains factory-original sharpening to both the edges and tip. Acid-etched onto the obverse of the blade is an inscription of “ALLES FÜR DEUTSCHLAND” (“EVERYTHING FOR GERMANY”) in Fraktur script. The reverse ricasso bears a maker’s mark of “WILH. WAGNER, SOLINGEN-MERSCHEID”, circumscribing the firm’s monogram logo. The blade sits securely within a nickel-silver upper crossguard which is marked with eight notches, distributed in groups of four at both the top and bottom. Stamped onto the reverse of the crossguard is a mark of “P”, indicating distribution to personnel of SA-Gruppe Pommern (Pomerania). A single piece of lacquered dark brown wood composes the handle grip, and is carved into a curvature for a comfortable grip. Inset into the obverse of the handle is a silvered German national eagle clutching a wreathed mobile swastika, measuring 25 mm (w) x 15 mm (h). Also inset into the obverse pommel is a silvered and enameled SA insignia measuring 9 mm in diameter. A nickel-silver lower crossguard completes the dagger, similarly marked with eight notches, and retains a rounded pommel nut to maintain the dagger’s structural integrity. It is accompanied by its original scabbard, constructed of a brown anodized magnetic metal shaft. Nickel-silver fixtures are secured to both the tip and throat with dual side rivets, with the latter also featuring a loop for the accommodation of a hanger. A functional catch situated within the throat firmly holds the dagger in place during storage Issues consistent with age and wear are evident, and include visible running marks and evidence of cleaning throughout the blade, two large chips to the reverse handle along the seams of the upper and lower crossguard, an additional small chip to the obverse of the handle along the seam of the lower crossguard, and scratching and denting to to the nickel-silver fixtures. With a McSarr rarity rating of nine, this rare dagger remains in a very fine condition.
