Germany, SA. A Model 1933 Service Dagger, Late-Period Example, by Franz Frenzel

(Sturmabteilung Dienstdolch M33). A well-preserved Sturmabteilung (SA) Model 1933 Service Dagger, measuring 37.5 cm in total length when inserted into the scabbard. It features a 22.5 cm-long, nickel-plated, magnetic steel blade which retains factory-original sharpening to both the edges and tip, and demonstrates fine cross graining. Acid-etched onto the obverse is an inscription of “ALLES FÜR DEUTSCHLAND” (“EVERYTHING FOR GERMANY”) in Fraktur script. The reverse ricasso is marked with a Reichszeugmeisterei (RZM) logo and maker code of “M7/116” for Franz Frenzel, Nixdorf (now Mikulášovice, Czech Republic). It sits securely within a multi-piece hilt featuring a nickel-plated zink alloy upper crossguard which is marked with eight notches, distributed in groups of four at both the top and bottom. The handle grip is composed of a single piece of lacquered dark brown wood which is carved into a curvature for a comfortable grip. Inset into the obverse of the handle is a silvered German national eagle clutching a wreathed mobile swastika, measuring 25 mm (w) x 15 mm (h) overall. Also inset into the obverse pommel is a partially-silvered SA insignia measuring 9 mm in diameter. A nickel-plated zink alloy lower crossguard completes the dagger, and similarly features eight notches while retaining a rounded pommel that maintains the dagger’s structural integrity. Accompanying the dagger is its original scabbard, constructed of a brown painted magnetic metal shaft. Nickel-plated magnetic metal fixtures are secured to both the tip and throat with side rivets. An integral loop emanates from the latter for the accommodation of a hanger. A functional spring catch situated within the throat firmly holds the dagger in place during storage. Issues consistent with age and wear are evident, and include minor running marks to the blade, sporadic loss of nickel to the plated fixtures, and some scratching of the scabbard paint. This late-period example remains in a near extremely fine condition.
