Germany, RLB. A Rare Subordinate’s Dagger, First Model, Owner-Customized Example by Paul Weyersberg

(Reichsluftschutzbund Dolch für Unterführer - 1. Modell). A well-preserved Reichsluftschutzbund (Reich Air Protection League/RLB) first pattern subordinate’s dagger, measuring 36.5 cm in total length when inserted into the scabbard. It features a 22 cm-long, nickel-plated, magnetic steel blade which retains factory-original sharpening to both the edge and tip, and with much of its original crossgrain still visible. The obverse of the blade bears a carefully hand-engraved dedication of “O.L. P.J.A. 272”, above an owner’s name of “MAX T- -T”. While entirely speculatory, the former may indicate “OBERLEUTNANT PANZERJÄGER-ABTEILUNG 272” (attached to 272. Infanterie-Division from 17 September 1944), reflecting possible military service by the owner. The reverse ricasso bears a maker’s mark of “PAUL WEYERSBERG & CO., SOLINGEN”, circumscribing the firm’s classic wreathed sword logo. The blade sits securely within a nickel-plated crossguard, the obverse of which bears an RLB-style German national eagle clutching a wreathed mobile swastika, with an intact blackened leather buffer pad covering the seam. A single piece of lacquered dark brown wood composes the handle grip, with a silvered and enameled RLB insignia affixed to the obverse, measuring 25 mm (w) x 25 mm (h). It culminates in a nickel-plated pommel which screws in to maintain the dagger’s structural integrity. Accompanying the dagger is its original scabbard, constructed of a black painted magnetic metal shaft. An eyelet and triangular ring emanate from the shaft just below the throat for the accommodation of a hanger, which is included and consists of a blackened leather strap retaining a functional magnetic metal spring clip. A functional catch situated within the throat firmly holds the dagger in place during storage. Issues consistent with age and wear are evident, and include some running marks to the blade, a patina throughout the hilt fittings, with loss of silver finish exposing the alloy base metal, repainting of the scabbard, and some fatigue to the leather strap of the hanger. This early and owner-customized example remains in a better than very fine condition.
