Description
Description
(Polizei Degen für Unterführer mit SS Troddel). A Police NCO’s dress sword, measuring 100 cm in total length when inserted into the scabbard. It features an 82 cm-long, nickel-plated, magnetic steel blade which retains factory-original sharpening to both the tip and lower edge. The reverse ricasso bears a maker’s mark of “ANTON WINGEN JR. SOLINGEN”, circumscribing the firm’s classic knight logo. It sits securely within a multi-piece hilt, with an intact blackened leather buffer pad covering the seam. The hilt has a nickel-plated magnetic steel crossguard and hand guard which culminates in a flattened oval pommel. The handle grip is composed of a single piece of ribbed and black painted wood, with the obverse inset with a silvered Ordnungspolizei insignia measuring 23 mm (w) x 20 mm (h). Wrapped around the crossguard is a mis-mached SS portepee, consisting of a stylized silver aluminum wire acorn suspended from a stem bearing machine-embroidered black Sig runes, in turn descending from a silver aluminum wire cord trimmed with machine-embroidered black tresses. Accompanying the sword is its original scabbard, constructed of a black painted magnetic metal shaft. A nickel-plated magnetic metal fixture is affixed to the throat and decorated with trefoil designs, while a functional catch situated within firmly holds the sword in place during storage. An integral loop and ring situated just below the throat accommodates a hanger. Issues consistent with age and wear are evident, and include running marks and surface oxidation to the blade, loss of nickel plating to the hilt resulting in some surface oxidation, loss of paint to the handle grip with some deterioration of the insignia, and minor loss of scabbard paint some the remnants of an adhesive visible to the shaft just below the throat. This untouched example retaining an SS portepee remains in a very fine condition.
