(Gebirgs-Pionier Erinnerungsabzeichen). Constructed of a silvered zink alloy, topped by an integral loop for suspension, the obverse bearing two raised edelweiss topped by a pennant, circumscribed by inscriptions of “GEB. PI. BTL. 54” and “UNBANDIG BEINAND!”, the reverse bearing a central raised map of the Balkan peninsula, Turkey, and souther Ukraine, with arrows charting the movement of Gebirgs-Pionier-Bataillon 54 from the Eastern Front (Kuban Bridgehead) to the Balkans, circumscribed by inscriptions of “KUBAN BRÜCKENKOPF - MONTENEGRO - ALBANIEN - GRIECHENLAND - SERBIEN”, measuring 36.35 mm in diameter, weighing 14.2 grams, a rare medal in near extremely fine condition.
Footnote: Gebirgs-Pionier-Bataillon 54 participated in the battles around the Kuban Bridgehead throughout the early spring of 1943, constructing defensive positions and covering the German retreat through March. It was then that the unit was transferred to Crimea via the Kerch Strait, before transiting to Greece via Romania and Bulgaria. By the end of 1943, the unit was stationed in Bosnia and Croatia, where it participated in anti-Partisan operations.
