Germany, Wehrmacht. A Demjansk Shield, Side Clip Variant

(Ärmelschild Demjansk). Constructed of magnetic metal, the obverse consisting of a shield bearing raised and crossed swords, overlaying a plane in mid-flight, situated above a date of “1942”, and topped by an inscription of “DEMJANSK”, in turn below a German national eagle perched on top of a wreathed mobile swastika and flanked by log pillboxes, retaining all four side clips, unmarked, measuring 50.62 mm (w) x 92.12 mm (h), weighing 11.9 grams, missing its backplate and liner and demonstrating some softening of features consistent with age and wear (particularly evident to the eagle’s head), a scarce example demonstrating all documented features of the sole variant of the Narvik Shield produced with side clips, in very fine condition.
