Germany, Wehrmacht. A Rare Spanish Cross, Silver Grade with Case, by Steinhauer & Lück

(Spanienkreuz in Silber mit Etui). Constructed of silvered tombak, consisting of a vaulted Maltese Cross, the obverse with pebbled arms joined through the quadrants by Luftwaffe eagles clutching mobile swastikas, bearing a central raised mobile swastika situated within dual circular rings, the reverse with a raised barrel hinge and banjo-style pinback meeting a flat wire catch, the pinback maker marked with Präsidialkanzlei (PKZ) code “4” for Steinhauer & Lück, measuring 57.19 mm (w) x 56.94 mm (h), weighing 26.4 grams, accompanied by its original presentation case, constructed of a pressed card stock frame with a faux dark blue leather exterior liner, the interior with a blue rayon lid liner and intact hinge cover, with a slotted dark blue velvet medal bed, closing with a functional metal spring catch with a push-button release, unmarked, measuring 78 mm (w) x 78 mm (l) x 25 mm (h), a rare wartime-compatible Steinhauer & Lück piece with a Präsidialkanzlei mark in extremely fine condition.

Footnote: With approximately 327 examples of the Silver Grade without Swords issued to non-combatants, this grade is, numerically, the scarcest of the standard issue variants of the Spanish Cross (ie. with the exception of Diamonds and for Next-of-Kin).
