Description
(Freikorps Brief und Militärpaß, mit Insignien). A lot of four Freikorps items, including:
1. A Militärpaß, constructed of a card stock binding with 20 paginated interior pages filled with handwritten entries, named to “WILHELM BONN”, who saw service on the Western Front of the First World War from 1917 and who received the 1914 Iron Cross II Class (8 November 1918), and who later participated in a Freikorps unit in the Berlin area and was released from service in May 1919, measuring 85 mm (w) x 135 mm (h), the binding has separated and moderate discolouration and material fatigue is evident throughout, in very fine condition.
2. A letter from an Oberleutnant attached to 3. Marine-Brigade von Loewenfeld, with postmarks from Kiel on 4 March 1920, unfolding to reveal a lengthy handwritten inscription in which the author laments the state of the city and the mutineer sailors it remains rife with, notably written just before the author and his unit deployed to Breslau in advance of the Kapp Putsch, measuring 128 mm (w) x 180 mm (h) when unfolded, a fascinating primary document from a key unit and event in the history of the Freikorps in extremely fine condition.
3. A Selbstschutz Oberschlesien (S.S.O.S.) insignia, constructed of gilded and silvered bronze, the obverse consisting of a shield with a pebbled border, bearing a central sword plunging into a nest of snakes, perforated with four holes for sew-on attachment, unmarked, measuring 44 mm (w) x 54 mm (h), with minor oxidation and loss of finish visible to the top corners, in very fine condition.
4. A Freiwilligen Landesschützenkorps cap cockade and wreath, of two-piece construction, consisting of a semi-circular oak leaf wreath constructed of silvered bronze, the reverse missing all four attachment prongs, unmarked, measuring 48 mm (w) x 40 mm (h), with a tri-colour cockade consisting of a black embroidered backer topped by a bronze ring and with a central red wool centrepiece, in overall fair condition.
