(Ordre national de la Légion d'honneur, Officier). Instituted in 1802. (1870-1951 Issue). In Gold with white, blue, red and green enamels, featuring a five armed white enameled Maltese cross with ball finials, laurels in each quadrant, the obverse medallion bearing the head of Marianne facing right, surrounded by a blue enamel ring inscribed REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE 1870, the reverse bearing two crossed flags, surrounded by a blue enamel ring inscribed HONNEUR ET PATRIE, hallmarked with a eagle’s head on the laurel tassels on the reverse, measuring 61.6 mm (h- inclusive of its wreath and laterally-pierced ball suspension) x 43 mm (w), weighing 17.3 grams, large chip on the 6 o'clock arm on the white enamel on reverse, large rosette on its original ribbon, extremely fine.
Footnote: On 19 May 1802, the Legion of Honour was established by a vote of the First Council who approved the formation of the Legion. The Legion was the first European Order that was created as an Order of Merit, based on the principle of equality of birth, and which was open to individuals of all ranks and professions; only merit or bravery counted.
