France, Napoleonic Kingdom. A Field Marshal's Carriage Shield

This personal heraldic shield dates from approximately 1855 and likely used as a identifical plaque on the side of a carriage. In cast gilt bronze, unmarked, obverse illustrating an open right hand facing palm up in the centre of a shield, the shield with a series of fine horizontal lines, overlaying crossed batons with eagles, inscribed "TERROR" and "BELLI “ (The Terror of War) on their upper ends, the lower ends with olive leaves, topped by a left-facing plumed, armoured knight's barred helmet with a chain and locket around the neck, the shield surrounded by an ornate, undulating ribbon, tied in a bow at the bottom with a crowned French Order of the Legion of Honour below the bow, reverse with four screwposts in the corners, each with 33 mm x 33 mm thick, square leather washers, which have hardened with age and accompanying wingnuts, measuring 108 mm x 180 mm x 50 mm inclusive of the hardware on the reverse, extremely fine.
